Celebrity hairstylist Frederic Fekkai’s clients have included Jennifer Connelly, Renee Zellweger, Debra Messing and Jenna Elfman. When we caught up with him he had just flown in from New York and arrived at his suite at the L’Ermitage hotel in Beverly Hills. He said he found there to be “an incredible energy right away when you enter the hotel coming out of the airport or the limousine. You can feel that something big is happening here. It’s fabulous. It’s all beauty, it’s about glamour.
“It’s going to be an interesting Academy Awards this year because I believe, every year it’s getting better and better in terms of beauty and fashion because it’s eclectic,” he said. “When people have a style of their own it’s a bit more individual, it’s about personality.” Tresses will be styled in the mood of fashion today, “a soft wave, and even some big curls, or smooth but with a bounce and life…a little bit more romance.”
Fekkai said that coming out of tough economic times and the 9/11 era, few stars will go too far over the top. Styles will be subdued, normal and elegant in a very nice and humble way. “I think it’s going to be about ‘classy’, ‘elegant,’ with a fun twist but nothing too outrageous.”
Fekkai said he plans to limit himself to a single client on Oscar day, allowing him to better manage his time and focus on that person’s particular needs–but he doesn’t know who it will be yet. “Frankly, I don’t want to know until the day,” he said. “I love the surprise for myself.”
