The Screen Actors Guild passed out their top honors Sunday night amid Oscar-worthy glitz and glamour. The ceremony was even held at the Shrine Auditorium, where the Oscars ceremony will be held March 25. But the SAG Awards are not the Academy Awards — only a precursor.
What impact, if any, will the SAGs have on the Oscars? Jay and Liv discuss:
Hollywood.com: Anything surprise you two at the SAGs?
Liv Maxwell: Benicio Del Toro‘s win for best actor. First of all, it surprises me he was nominated in the category, when he’s only been considered a supporting actor by the Academy. But his win, of course, has no effect on the Oscar race.
Jay Beam: I was shocked by Sarah Jessica Parker‘s inability to form a sentence. I guess they serve drinks at those tables?
Hollywood.com: Parker was wearing one of the more interesting outfits of the night. Anyone else strike you as well dressed? Or the opposite?
Maxwell: I loved the way Parker adjusted herself on stage. She may have been drunk but she looked good. I thought Kate Hudson was stunning. She even managed to clean up her rocker husband.
Beam: Yes, Hudson was looking good. But what’s up with Kate Winslet? Did she join a biker gang? She was upholstered, not “dressed.”
Hollywood.com: Robert Downey Jr. walked away with another major award for his work on “Ally McBeal.” Was it a sympathy vote, or a legitimate accolade?
Maxwell: Sympathy for what, exactly? It’s not like someone is forcing the drugs down his throat. Though I’m not a huge “Ally” fan myself, I have heard he is quite good on the show.
Beam: Completely legitimate. He single-handedly breathed new life into a wandering show.
Hollywood.com: So how do you think the SAGs will affect the upcoming Academy Awards?
Beam: Not in the least. Anyone voting for the Oscars has already done so.
Maxwell: True. But people participating in those office pools out there still have to make up their minds. Seems that the SAGs stayed pretty much as predicted, although Judi Dench‘s win for supporting actress won’t translate come Oscar time. The Academy loves to vote for the young newcomer in that category. Kate Hudson should fill that spot.
