Lucasfilm warns filmmakers “correcting” its films

One week after George Lucas appeared to bless efforts by student filmmakers to devise “corrected” versions of Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, Lucasfilm posted a copyright warning on the Star Wars Web site on Friday implying that the company would take legal action against anyone who did so. “There has been a lot of attention paid recently to unauthorized edits of The Phantom Menace,” the notice said. “While we appreciate fan enthusiasm in general, creating, duplicating and/or distributing any edited version of a Star Wars film is clear copyright infringement and is illegal.” A week earlier, Lucas was quoted by the
Internet site Zap2it.com as saying, “The Internet is a new medium. It’s all about doing things like that.”
