For several months now, you’ve heard all the major film critics’ associations announce their picks for the best films of 2002. But what could be more important than the opinions of moviegoers like you? After all, you’re the ones who actually have to shell out a fistful of dollars to catch the latest cinematic marvels.

So even though the critics are not-so-unanimously proclaiming Far From Heaven, The Pianist, The Hours and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers as the best films of the year, voters in our poll say Gangs of New York is the best motion picture in the drama category.

Funnily enough, just as the critics are split over the year’s best film, the Martin Scorsese epic didn’t exactly win a landslide victory in our poll, either.

Gangs received 32 percent of the votes, but was followed closely by The Hours, which received 31 percent, and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which took 30 percent.

Leonardo DiCaprio was your choice for best actor in a dramatic role for his performance in Catch Me If You Can–but the competition almost caught up to him: Daniel Day-Lewis was hot on his heels for his performance in Gangs, as was Jack Nicholson for About Schmidt.

Nicole Kidman (The Hours) was just a prosthetic nose behind Diane Lane, whose gut-wrenching performance in the adulterous drama Unfaithful took best actress in a drama honors. You also thought Chicago deserved best musical or comedy motion picture kudos, while the film’s star, Renee Zellweger, was voted best actress in a comedy or musical.

Incredibly, there was a two-way tie for the best performance by an actor in a musical or comedy: Nicolas Cage (Adaptation) and Hugh Grant (About A Boy) each took 27 percent of the votes.

The TV race had its share of twists, too, although it wasn’t nearly as close as the motion pictures one.

You voted 24 as your favorite drama (eat your heart out, Tony Soprano) and you thought star Kiefer Sutherland was deserving of the best actor in a drama award. Meanwhile, butt-kicker Jennifer Garner was a shoo-in for drama actress honors for her role in Alias.

In terms of comedy, Friends was the favorite this year by a long shot; you gave the series a whopping 48 percent of the votes in the comedy category.

Star Jennifer Aniston won the best actress in a comedy category with 48 percent of your votes, as well, leaving the other candidates, including perennial winner Sarah Jessica Parker, in the dust. Another Friend, Matt LeBlanc, won the male acting honors for comedy with almost half the votes, proving that fans still can’t enough of Joey “How you doin’?” Tribianni.
