For those who aren’t fans of radio’s bad boy, it looks as if their biggest wish will come true, maybe: Shock jock Howard Stern will finally be silenced for good. Maybe.
Stern’s five-year contract expires at the end of this year and with current negotiations seemingly coming to a standstill, the radio personality has announced that Friday will be his last day on the air, The Associated Press reports.
“This is not a disc jockey stunt,” promised Stern, the creator of Lesbian Dial-A-Date and the Homeless Hollywood Squares. “I don’t do disc jockey stunts.”
Last week, Stern said he did not want to go off the air. He wants to return to his post as the head of New York’s No. 1 morning radio show.
However, his chances of returning with his sidekick Robin Quivers, producer Gary Dell’Abate and celebrity reporter/stalker Stuttering John are at 60 percent, he said.
Although he remains No. 1 in New York, Stern’s syndicated show has slipped in other markets, especially in Los Angeles where he’s lost 20 percent of his audience over the past two years, according to Arbitron figures.
His show currently airs in more than three dozens stations across North America.
