Vanessa Hudgens Joins ‘Journey 2’

ALT TEXTVanessa Hudgens is set to star in a new movie that’s not High School Musical, but pretty much just as lame. The young actress is in final negotiations to play the female lead in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D. Oh boy!

Hudgens joins a cast that already features Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson. Brad Peyton will direct with Beau Flynn and Trip Vinson producing. Production hopes to start in late October in North Carolina and Hawaii.

The story follows Johnson and Hutcherson as the venture to a mythical island in search of Hutcherson’s grandfather. It will be shot in 3D (like the original) and is loosely based on Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island. Hudgens will play a Pacific Islander who joins the adventure and falls in love with Hutcherson (lucky guy!).

In a film that promises to be horrible, Hudgens addition doesn’t add much other than underscoring the probability of failure. But despite the inevitable badness, Journey 2 will make all sorts of cash. The first film grossed more than $250 million worldwide, so it’s understandable why WB wanted to make another. But, I just don’t get it. I could beg you all to not watch this film. I could tell you that watching this film will give you a terminal illness. Or an STD. Or physically punch you in the face. And no matter what, it will still make a boatload of cash. It’s like Hollywood is playing one big bazinga on us, but no one can figure out why it keeps working.
