Paramount Pictures is making moves to own the box office in 2011, as they've just added J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg's super-secretive Super 8 to the Summer schedule for next year. With a slate that includes two Marvel superhero films (Captain America and Thor) as well as sequels like Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom and Transformers 3, it's going to be a season for the record book, to say the least.
Though the Abrams produced Mission: Impossible IV was long thought to be another Summer tentpole, the studio just set a December 16th release date for the actioner, which will see Tom Cruise reprising the role of IMF agent Ethan Hunt once again.
It's not a bad idea, as Avatar proved that launching a big-budget blockbuster in the holiday season can be as lucrative as a Summer bow. This would be the first Mission to open outside of May.
