J.J. AbramsSince it was first announced - or teased, rather - earlier this year, speculation and anticipation for J.J. Abrams' Super 8 has been pretty high. After all, it's not everyday that the modern master of all things geek and the king of all media Steven Spielberg team up for a secretive science fiction project. As we learned more about the film little by little, it became clear that Abrams and his Bad Robot team were cooking up something special.

Now we've gotten word from Box Office Mojo that Super 8 will open on June 10th, 2011. It's no surprise that Paramount Pictures is releasing it on the date: The distributor has big movies set for May (Thor and Kung Fu Panda 2) and July (Captain America: The First Avenger and Transformers: The Dark of the Moon) but left June wide open for rival companies, like Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox, to populate the sixth month of the year with their own product. It now appears that Super 8 will fill a hole in the studio's release schedule and present quite a challenge for the competition.

And the competition is heavy. Universal Pictures will unleash Fast Five, a franchise flick with a loyal built in audience, on that date, while the romantic comedy Something Borrowed is scheduled to counter both films. Though the latter is still without a distributor, its cast includes John Krasinski, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson, so I'm not expecting its producers to shy away from the steep competition. The real story is how Universal's tried and true auto-action series will fare against Abrams' eagerly awaited film. One is veiled in mystery while the other is sure to bring its audience more of the same high-octane thrills that they've been enjoying for ten years. New vs. Old - what do you think?
