The 61st Annual Golden Globes ceremony was yet another short and sweet affair–which still comes as a surprise given the way entertainment folk like to talk. Nevertheless, there were a few juicy quips dropped throughout the evening (who is Ricky Gervais and where the heck can we watch The Office?)
Here are some of the evening’s best quotes:
“We just sat down. Getting this so early, I get to drink now.”–Tim Robbins, accepting the first award of the evening for best supporting actor in a motion picture.
“Now I can drink with Tim!”–Anthony Lapaglia, accepting the next award for best actor in a drama series.
“I don’t know who you are.”–Sean Hayes to Dick Clark.
“We didn’t expect to win this but we’ll keep it….don’t know who I’m suppose to thank…oh, right, thanks to Hollywood Foreign Press…Not used to this stuff, we’re from a little place called England. We used to run the world before you.”–The Office‘s Ricky Gervais, accepting the award for best TV comedy series.
“I’ve been here before; it’s good…Two bookends, excellent. You really need the set. I haven’t prepared a speech, as you might have guessed. Just wasting time until the thing says “Get off!”–Gervais later, accepting for best actor in a comedy television series.
“I just realized you can see completely through my dress. So now I’m keeping [my legs] together.”–Meryl Streep, accepting the award for best actress in a television movie or miniseries.
“It was cruel, unforgiving and wet–just like Paris Hilton.”–Robin Williams, introducing the film clip for Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
“When [director] Nancy [Meyers] opened that door, I crept through to find Jack Nicholson on the other side…Jack and Diane, two actors whose combined age is 125!”–Diane Keaton, accepting the award for best actress in a motion picture, musical or comedy.
“I’d like to thank Universal and Focus Features but there are so many people trying to take credit for this, I don’t know where to begin.”–Bill Murray, accepting for best actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy.
“Let’s not forget our brothers on the other side of the aisle–the dramatic actors. I’d just like to say: Where would our war, our miseries and our psychological traumas come from?”–Murray, continuing his acceptance speech.
“I don’t look like Sean Penn, but I am.”–director Clint Eastwood, accepting the best actor in a motion picture, drama, award for winner Sean Penn.
“He wants to know if I’m nice and relaxed? JACK!”–Charlize Theron, reacting to presenter Jack Nicholson‘s whispered comment after handing her the award for best actress in a motion picture, drama.
“Look how striking I am as a bald man. Let’s reflect on that.”–Jim Carrey, presenting the award for best motion picture, musical or comedy.
