It has been more than two decades since Mia Thermopolis first discovered she was a princess, but the royal story isn’t over yet. The Princess Diaries 3 is officially in development, with Anne Hathaway set to return as the beloved Genovian royal.
The original The Princess Diaries premiered in 2001 and quickly became a fan favorite. Hathaway starred as awkward teenager Mia, who learns that she is heir to the throne of the fictional European kingdom of Genovia. Julie Andrews played her elegant and formidable grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi.
The story continued with 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which saw Mia preparing to take the throne. Now, fans are finally getting another chapter.
When Is ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ Coming Out?
A release date has not been announced yet. The movie was officially confirmed to be in development in October 2024, but production has not begun.
Hathaway recently indicated that the project is still moving forward, although the original screenplay has been discarded and a new direction is being developed.
Who Is Returning?
Hathaway is currently the only officially confirmed cast member. Fans are hoping to see the return of several familiar faces, including Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse and Chris Pine as Nicholas Devereaux.
Pine has previously expressed enthusiasm about returning, while Sandra Oh has also said she would happily reprise her hilarious role as Vice Principal Gupta.
Robert Schwartzman, who played Mia’s first-film love interest Michael Moscovitz, has likewise indicated that he would be open to coming back.
Who Is Directing?
Adele Lim, whose credits include Crazy Rich Asians, Joy Ride and Raya and the Last Dragon, is directing the third installment.
What Will ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ Be About?
Plot details remain firmly under wraps. However, the film will continue Mia’s story years after the events of the first two movies.
Flora Greeson is writing the screenplay, while franchise creator Meg Cabot has revealed that she has read multiple versions of the script and is particularly enthusiastic about the latest one.
For now, fans will have to wait for the next royal announcement before discovering what’s in store for Mia and the kingdom of Genovia.
