Nurse Jackie Premiere
(Monday, June 8, 2009)
Edie Falco is back on TV, but on Showtime not HBO — what a scandal! Now that we’re subscribers of Showtime (as we advised last Tuesday upon purchasing season 4 of Weeds to prepare for tonight’s season 5 opener at 10PM), we can become wistful for the steely Carmela Soprano in real time. Falco maintains the former sharp bitch in her (the one that earned her three Emmys, m’kay?) to embody Jackie, a super-stressed New York City nurse with a get-out-of-my-face-or-I’ll-cut-it ‘tude. She doesn’t want to date Peter Facinelli, no matter the pinks roses he offers her or his recent vampire role in Twilight. (She’s married by the by and bedding the pharmacist. For the drugs, natch.) Jackie’s fix? Snortin’ and poppin’ pain killers. The other one? Her moral code (think Dexter Morgan). Let’s just tease that a little bit of her clandestine hospital work includes flushing a patient’s ear down a toilet and taking other organs and putting them in other bodies — because Jackie says so. Did we mention this show is also a barrel of laughs? (10:30PM PT)
