Jessica Simpson is Doing “Missionary Work”

Jessica SimpsonJessica Simpson accepted the Dove Real Beauty Award this week in L.A., presumably for having real beauty. (You can disagree.) When she was up on stage giving her acceptance speech, she was so moved that she decided to remind everyone why, exactly, she deserves the recognition.

“I’m not saying I’m changing the world, but…to be able to sit with my Dad and [create] ‘Price of Beauty’… It’s similar to missionary work. It was what I was called to do and called to be.”

If she had said ‘Price of Beauty’ was similar to tuna, we wouldn’t have an issue. But from what I understand about missionary work (which is stupidly little), it is not flying to India and trying on other people’s beautiful jewelry, giving elephants baths, or ingesting flies only to throw them up again. There’s very little missionary work in any of that. Somewhere (I think on the storytime carpet in second grade), I think I learned missionary work had to do with people spreading knowledge of the church (if I’m wrong, email me or something). It’s possible she was referencing the definition of a Christian Missionary, which is “someone who is sent to witness across cultures.” If that’s what she was getting at, cool. But if we think about how Jessica Simpson confused the vowels with the continents, I think we can all agree there’s just no room in her brain for the true definition of a missionary, which just means she’s taking her post-divorce reinvention trips a little too seriously.
