Adam Shankman’s screen adaptation of Rock of Ages was hunting Anne Hathaway and later Amy Adams for the role of a hard-nosed journalist who gets seduced by Tom Cruise’s 80s rock star, Stacee Jaxx. Neither of those ladies ended up signing on, but Cruise now has his lady journalist in Malin Akerman.
Now, I didn’t really think Akerman could sing, so I’m not sure why she’s cast in a musical in the role that producers sought to fill with capable singers like Adams and Hathaway, so I did some research. Akerman used to be the lead singer of a band called The Petalstones, but it doesn’t seem that she really carries much of a tune with them either. Oh well, from the sound of things Cruise will be doing most of the voice-work anyway.
Akerman joins the long list of big names involved in the movie musical, including Russell Brand, Juliane Hough, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin and Mary J. Blige. But in case you were wondering what we might be in for with this bit o’ casting, here’s Akerman performing with The Petalstones at the Viper Room in Los Angeles a few years ago. You’ll see where my apprehension stems from.
