BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Oct. 4, 2000 – It was a black-tie affair, as famous figures from the world of sports and film were in attendance for the 4th Annual Evening Of Champions charity event at the Beverly Hilton Wednesday night.
Andy Garcia, Jimmy Smits, Shaquille O’Neal, Nancy O’Dell, Eriq LaSalle, Mia St. John, Billy Blanks, Barbara Eden, Michael Buffer and Jerry West were all apart of the occasion that benefited the Oscar De La Hoya Foundation and Youth Center.
“We’ve been able to help over 2,000 kids stay off the streets by providing them with boxing programs, a learning center, and physical-fitness training,” beamed De La Hoya.
“Sports played a big part in my life and it’s good to have strong role models and mentors,” said honoree Andy Garcia.
The organization provides scholarships to inner-city students and helps keep children off the streets by giving them the opportunity to develop new skills and achieve positive goals. It was started as a tribute to his mother.
