In her movies, Angelina Jolie‘s hair has always made as big a statement as her acting.
From brilliant to dull in color and from unending to cropped in length, we love Jolie for all her peculiarities, and most especially for the hair at which we are about to stare.
Yes, we’re holding a hair-raising pictorial celebration to honor the newly platinum queen (in Life or Something Like It) of multitudinous-mops-in-the-movies.
It is the hair, after all, that says so much about a movie character.
Think about it, we always judge a character by her hair. The unspoken rule seems to be that blondes have more fun, brunettes are taken more seriously and redheads…well, they run the gamut. (Take the fiery, red-headed courtesan Nicole Kidman plays in Moulin Rouge; her hair color appropriately matches the red light district in which she works.)
Thus, our hat is off–of course it is, or it’d cover our hair–to all the stylists who have spent long hours fussing over Angelina Jolie‘s head, and made the following looks possible.

The Movie: Life or Something Like It
Her Character: Lanie Kerrigan
Representing her newest movie, Angelina Jolie dons a rather retro Marilyn Monroe-style ‘do, and boy are we feeling the love-hate relationship.
Jolie is simply gorgeous with those lovely platinum locks that, from the outside, make her seem like one of the blondes who really do have more fun. Her character sports a posh Seattle apartment, a hunk of a boyfriend and an exciting career as a news reporter.
We hope, of course, she doesn’t let her roots show through when one of her interviewees prophesizes she’s about to lose it all within a matter of days…

Auburn ‘n Bangs
The Movie: Pushing Tin
Her Character: Mary Bell
The Goth-like, pin straight, trashy hair that is part of character Mary Bell seems strangely close to home for Jolie, who even met her husband Billy Bob Thornton on that set.
We know the real-life Jolie practices what some might call “alternative living” with her many tattoos, a necklace with a vial of Thornton‘s blood and her desire to walk around shirtless all the time.
Although we’re not sure how this factors into her daily life, we do know that the tinted pile of protein on display is very much a part of her character’s shield from the rest of the world in this film. She moves mysteriously behind it, leaving people to guess her intentions at all times. She also happens to be a stark contrast to the female lead opposite her: a very blonde Cate Blanchett.

Strawberry Weave
The Movie: Girl, Interrupted
Her Character: Lisa Rowe
This rather in-between color that seems to match every color–or lack thereof–on Jolie‘s face is also representative of her most unpredictable character, Lisa, a harridan who fights her way in and out of the mental facility to which she is admitted.
Her shorn baby-bangs are indicative of her immature character who longs to be loved; and it just seems like each strand stands out individually, just waiting to be combed into one, united mane.

Streaky Blonde
The Movie: Gone in 60 Seconds
Her Character: Sara Sway
Veering off the beaten path, car-thief and freaky-hair-extrodinaire Sara Sway shows us a little dirt behind that blonde. It’s a long, blond, dreadlock-inspired do–a romantic-yet-edgy look that stands out in a film filled with night scenes, cars, and mucho testosterone.
At one point, she graces her scalp with braids-a-plenty, as she surely impresses us with her harrowing knowledge in the art of purloining vehicles.

Chocolate Plait
The Movie: Tomb Raider
Her Character: Lara Croft
Croft’s cool, natural ability to fight off the bad guys and retain sought-after booty at all costs makes “all-business brown” a likely color for this one-of-a-kind heroine who’s not afraid to travel through space and time–or of a little hand-to-hand combat.
Of equal importance is the ability to see from all angles, including the periphery, so the incredible, indomitable Lara Croft cannot be bothered with hair that is constantly falling in her face.
When she’s not wearing a braid, it’s in a pull-back ponytail. How sensible.

Dark Mane
The Movie: Original Sin
Her Character: Julia Russell/Bonny Castle
Playing a woman who could be the heir to an endless fortune, Jolie‘s flowing fibers have her looking like a countryside duchess who has been waiting a lifetime to be swept off of her feet.
Definitely a romantic look, the thick layers of hair are blanket-like: inviting, warm and cozy. But things are not always as they seem. Underneath it all, Bonny Castle is really Julia Russell–a cunning thief with a spotted past.
