Previous pairings: Lopez was briefly married to model Ojani Noa and has been linked to singer Marc Anthony and Sony exec Tommy Mottola; Combs was once married to a fashion stylist and had a child out of wedlock with model Kim Porter
Love story: Rumor has it that J.Lo and Puffy were dating a full year before they went public. The rapper got her to admit she liked him in an interview he did himself in his own magazine Notorious. A hot-and-heavy romance blossomed which frequently took a stormy turn. She reportedly disliked his public displays of affection and was wary of his temper. When he reportedly tried to save the relationship and woo her back with expensive gifts and promises to hand over chunks of his empire, J.Lo wasn’t interested (in fact, some speculated her song “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” was a Puffy blow-off). Lopez has told Rolling Stone that while he liked to hit the town, she preferred a quiet life at home–insiders say she also was fed up with Puffy‘s habit of partying with an entourage of women without her.
What went wrong? Was she tired of his bad-boy behavior, especially when she found her own reputation on the line after being busted after a nightclub shooting? (Puffy was acquitted of weapons and bribery charges; Lopez was arrested and released the night it happened.) Was he overly jealous and protective? (Tabloid reports say Puffy was so wildly jealous of Lopez‘s costar in The Wedding Planner, Matthew McConaughey, he went so far as to threaten the actor on the set.)
Post-split romance: Lopez is currently dating Cris Judd, one of her backup singer/dancers; Puffy and supermodel Naomi Campbell recently made headlines after being spotted partying into the wee hours in Miami, New York and Monaco.
What they’ve said: “I tried to be there for him [during his trial],” Lopez recently told Vanity Fair. “I tried to stay positive, even when I didn’t feel positive.” Puffy has made no secret of his devotion to J.Lo, comparing his love for her to Frank Sinatra‘s love for Ava Gardner in Vanity Fair. “She’ll always be someone that I love. All she’s gotta do is think … and I’ll be able to feel her.” The two claim they’re still “friends.”
