DO IT TODAY: ‘In Treatment’ DVDs

In Treatment DVDs
(Tuesday, Mar. 24, 2009)

It’s likely you didn’t watch In Treatment when it aired a year ago on HBO. Five nights a week? What a commitment (no pun intended). But when both the show and its star (Gabriel Byrne) garnered Golden Globes this year, suddenly, the repeats seemed tempting. Further temptation? A set of DVDs, out today, with all 43 episodes, featuring five patients over the course of nine weeks in therapy sessions. It’s simply voyeurism — if you’ve ever been in therapy, it’s intriguing to see how someone else’s session goes; if you’ve never been in therapy, it’s a look into a world you’ve scoffed at and/or had a secret desire to try. With the DVDs, you have the liberty to follow one patient all the way through his/her help or watch the show as intended — every patient one-by-one in a week’s span. On Mondays, Dr. Paul Weston (Byrne) sees Laura (Melissa George), an anesthesiologist who’s in love with Paul; Tuesdays: Alex (Blair Underwood), a traumatized fighter pilot; Wednesdays: Sophie (Mia Wasikowska): a suicidal teenage gymnast; Thursdays: Amy and James (Embeth Davidtz and Josh Charles), a couple weighing whether or not to have an abortion; and on Fridays, Paul visits his own psychotherapist and mentor, Gina (Dianne Wiest), to discuss his own crumbling marriage and family.
