S. Darko DVD
(Tuesday, May 12, 2009)
Let’s be clear: It’s no Donnie Darko. Jake ‘n’ Maggie aren’t in it. Donnie‘s director Richard Kelly has nothing to do with it (he’s busy cookin’ up Southland Tales 2 … OK, that’s a cruel joke). S. Darko ain’t got a prayer at becoming the Next Big Cult Fave like its big brother, but … who cares? It’s a weird direct-to-DVD unauthorized sequel featuring the legit Samantha — Daveigh Chase, all grown up, whose furrowed pout and plotting eyeballs were put to excellent use in Big Love. She’s strangely intriguing, and we’re interested to see what would possess this fragile girl to ditch her beloved dance troupe, Sparkle Motion. Sam joins her BFF Corey on a Virginia-to-California road trip, but of course, the car breaks down in a small town in Utah. Now, they’re stranded with the likes of Showgirls‘ Elizabeth Berkley, Gossip Girl‘s Ed Westwick and S’s disturbing flash-forward apocalyptic visions. God forbid this Darko ditches the formerly established time-travel mythology, right? Unlike Donnie, Samantha is concerned with “saving” what’s important to her — as girls are wont to do.
