Skins, Season 2 DVDs
(Tuesday, Apr. 14, 2009)
You remember this year’s Oscar anecdote du jour: Danny Boyle‘s daughter was all, “Dad, I’ve got the Slumdog Millionaire for you. He’s on this BBC show called Skins.” And you’re like, what’s Skins? Whatever it is, you’re watching it — and not just because Dev Patel is so adorable. But maybe because the show’s tagline is: “A group of optimistic kids who grab life by the balls.” The way-gutsier-than-an-American-teen-show-could-ever-be — its second season on DVD today — chronicles Tony getting out of his coma (getting hit by bus = sucks), Maxxie tolerating a stalker, another getting pregnant, and the once-faithful couple that is Sid and Cassie head for Splitsville, which of course, has Cassie dabbling in drugs and casual sex galore. Yep, even plot lines like this are rewarded with a Drama Series nomination at the 2008 BAFTA Television Awards — because it’s actually executed superbly. Patel’s role as Anwar, a British Pakistani Muslim teen, was partially written for Patel. Another star tidbit: The “boy” in About a Boy (Nicholas Hoult) plays the coma-stricken teen.
