Don’t Say a Word
The Players: Michael Douglas, Sean Bean, Jennifer Esposito, Famke Janssen, Brittany Murphy; directed by Gary Fleder
The Skinny:/B> When acclaimed New York psychiatrist Dr. Nathan Conrad’s (Douglas) daughter is kidnapped, his frantic race against the clock to get her back involves a wee bit of blackmail by Koster (Bean), the criminal mastermind behind her disappearance. If Conrad wants his child back, he must figure out how to get a troubled young woman (Murphy) to reveal the whereabouts of a stolen diamond for the bad guy. That might sound easy enough, except the girl’s traumatic past has rendered her nearly catatonic.
The Bottom Line: Whoever was behind this thriller’s marketing campaign must have taken its title as an instruction, because it seemingly came out of nowhere to hit theaters this month. Fleder (Kiss the Girls) will likely make it intriguingly creepy, but its premise is all too familiar–Silence of the Lambs with a little Ransom thrown in.
Opens: Sept. 28
