Shallow Hal
The Players: Jack Black, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jason Alexander, Tony Robbins; directed and co-written by Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly
The Skinny: The story revolves around a dumb and even dumber womanizer Hal (Black), whose life’s motto is to date model-type women. Until, that is, a self-help guru (Robbins) hypnotizes the shallow guy into seeing only the inner beauty of others. So what does he do? He immediately falls in love with a 300-pound woman (Paltrow in a fat suit), whom he only sees as the beautiful Paltrow we all know and love.
The Bottom Line: The Farrelly brothers know the public is expecting something outrageous from them since making a name for themselves in gross-out comedies. But have the guys softened with success? Peter Farrelly told Premiere, “Our goal has always been to make a movie that’s funny and sweet and ultimately a tearjerker. That’s what we’re aiming for here.” Right, and also not to offend people who may be overweight.
