The Skinny: Told in flashbacks, the story revolves around the relationship between a CIA operative (Pitt), trapped in a Chinese prison at the end of the Cold War and his mentor (Redford), who tries to free him the day before he’s due to retire. Pitt told Entertainment Weekly, “The movie is about how we may have been causing more damage than good–all in the name of democracy–and that maybe America has been No.1 just a little too long.” (He might just be eating those words now.)

The Bottom Line: Given the current climate, we’re not sure how America will handle a movie that dogs them a little, but it is Redford and Pitt, after all, so maybe that’ll make it OK. Watching them together is enough for most.
