Legendary French film director Jean-Luc Godard lashed out Tuesday at Hollywood, charging that movie studios there had reduced the art of cinema to “a commodity.” Speaking to reporters at the Cannes Film Festival, where his latest film, Éloge de l’amour, is entered in the competition, Godard was particularly critical of Steven Spielberg, arguably Hollywood’s most successful director. “I don’t think his films are very good,” he said, then offered to dissect one of them if a screening could be arranged. He appeared to have no illusions about the commercial potential of Éloge. When asked what he thought Americans would make of it, he replied, “I think they will have little chance of seeing it, apart from maybe in a few little cinemas.”
