A former tomboy who parlayed a modeling career into a blossoming movie career, Amy Smart-ly first made an impact with minor roles in Starship Troopers and The Last Time I Committed Suicide. Then came the teen hit Varsity Blues and popular indie flick Outside Providence, and the wheels of celebrity really began to turn. This blonde cutie with the girl-next-door appeal, who we caught on camera at the premiere of The Score, has four movies being released this year, including the much anticipated Rat Race later this summer.
We’re REAL glad mom didn’t become overprotective
Amy appeared topless for the first time in 2000’s Road Trip, a scene permanently etched in our brains. “I’d never done nudity before, so I was a little nervous,” she admitted to reporters. “Then the director, Todd Phillips, told me that he would never forget watching Phoebe Cates drop her top in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. He said it changed his life. I guess that made me feel better.” Amy did check with her female parental unit first. “She said, ‘If you think it’s the right choice, then you should do it'” Amy says. “I was just so glad she didn’t become overprotective.”

“When I tell people I was in Varsity Blues, they always say, ‘Oh, you’re the whipped-cream girl,’ especially because I’m totally blonde now,” Amy said at Sundance. No, it wasn’t Amy slathered in whip cream–give us a second while we revel in that image–she was instead James Van Der Beek‘s devoted girlfriend.
