Comedian Jim Carrey once famously wrote himself a multimillion dollar postdated check when he was a struggling actor and was able to cash it before the date expired when he became one of Hollywood’s highest paid stars. Now, Carrey is writing another seven-figure check, one for $1 million to the families of the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.
Carrey’s publicist announced the massive donation on Wednesday, saying the rubber-faced comedian made the contribution “with the deepest sympathies for their irredeemable personal losses. He hopes this donation encourages other people to contribute as generously as they can.”
That’s a far cry from the miserly character he played last year in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Carrey was also among the first A-List Hollywood celebrities to commit to appear on “America: A Tribute to Heroes,” the multi-network telethon slated to air Sept. 21.
Other celebrities in how have made million dollar donations include talk show queen Rosie O’Donnell, who opened her checkbook to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, and rap superstar Dr. Dre, who contributed to a Los Angeles radio show’s fundraising drive to benefit the American Red Cross.
