Here are our favorites from 2008, and as you’ll see, there isn’t necessarily any correlation between the quality of a poster and the movie it’s hawking…

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Given the movie’s twisted plotline, this poster is something of a failed opportunity — and yet it’s still one of the year’s best. Aside from the text appearing fittingly in reverse, Brad Pitt’s naked face is totally deglamorized, which is both impressive and, well, curious.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe

The “X” shadow created by Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) is simultaneously simple and eerie, and it’s more than enough to get the X-Files music going in your head. Too bad the movie was a colossal failure.

If this looks foreign to you, it should: Madonna’s directorial debut never really came out in theaters (hence its sub-$100,000 box-office gross). Which is a shame because the poster alone would’ve probably enticed more than a few curious male moviegoers.

 Rogue

Ah, the ol’ man-eating-crocodile plot: great for posters, not so great for the movie itself. Such is the case for Rogue, a cheesy, largely unscary Jaws rip-off, but one that boasts this superb shot of a mammoth croc waiting patiently for a human snack to fall into its mouth.

The cloud of smoke through which Seth RogenJames Franco and Danny McBride are strolling alludes to both marijuana and action-sequence explosions — thus making this poster the rare visual double entendre! Bonus points for the usually broody Franco’s giddy smile.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in matching argyle sweater vests and doofus faces? Just try not smiling at them! In fact, this poster — which is funnily reminiscent of another Judd Apatow-related movie’s poster, The 40-Year-Old Virgin — could double as a pick-me-up this winter for sufferers of seasonal affective disorder.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Jason Segel’s sadness evokes both pity and laughter, a dichotomy few, if any, other actors could pull off within the confines of a movie poster. Of course, the broken heart he’s holding doesn’t hurt.

Wanted

Even the staunchest gun-control proponents have to agree: There’s something about Angelina Jolie holding a gun the size of her head that’s just … enchanting. (And, oh yeah, James McAvoy’s there, too!) That said, would it’ve killed ‘em to airbrush a little meat onto those heavily tattooed bones?

If you look hard enough, you forget that Josh Brolin bears almost no physical resemblance to George W. Bush. But Brolin sure does have Dubya’s squinty-eyed gaze (toward nothin’ much) down to a science, and the tagline “A life misunderestimated” adds a perfect subtly satirical touch.

A beautiful face gone horrified. That the face in question belongs to Naomi Watts only makes this image more arresting.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Kevin Smith certainly would’ve had a field day with raunchier poster, but he actually seemed quite content with this more implicit, stick-figure rendering — besides, it’s a minor miracle that he was able to widely release a movie with the word “Porno” in its title, so no need to push his luck!

Cloverfield

J.J. Abrams and Co. capped off an absolutely genius marketing campaign — perpetually shrouded in mystery — with this buzz-provoking shot of a headless Lady Liberty and an up-in-smoke Manhattan in the distance. In early January, it was virtually impossible to look at it and not become very intrigued — or sold right then and there.
