Back story: Goth kids everywhere looked up to this seemingly perfect union between shock rocker Manson and horror movie princess McGowan, who has said she was into country music at the time she heard Manson had a crush on her. The two started dating after she asked him about his crush at the premiere of Gummo and soon were shacked up together outside Los Angeles. In 1999, MTV News reported that Manson had popped the question to McGowan by candlelight on Valentine’s Day when she was in the bath.
But … Maybe she was tired of him using up her makeup? Maybe he spent more on lingerie for himself than for her? We may never know … the official reason given for their broken engagement is the strain of their different lifestyles. Rumor has it the split was initiated by McGowan, who issued a statement saying “There is great love, but our lifestyle difference is, unfortunately, even greater.” Manson seems to be handling the breakup pretty well, recently saying in British rock mag Kerrang!, “Here I am, ladies, please form an orderly queue.” We’ll try to control ourselves.
