1997 comments: Another varied year as far as comparisons go–and a tough year for the race in personal dramas. Yet, the biggest surprise was Bacall’s loss to Binoche-again, a case of the Academy spreading the wealth, since both Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas of English Patient fame were certain to lose in their categories.
