GEORGE CLOONEY AS THE LONE RANGER?

Yes, it’s been rumored. “Word as of now is that George Clooney has shown a lot of interest in the role of the Lone Ranger,” says Ain’t It Cool News, “and the studio’s been talking to him about it. Previously it was rumored that Nic Cage was up for the role, but that rumor died a long time ago. Clooney‘s name has come up quite a number of times since.” And Johnny Depp‘s involvement in the big screen adaptation of the long-running 1950s TV show, as the loyal sidekick Tonto, was recently confirmed by the Mouse House. Really? Maybe I can wrap my brain around if this will be a parody.

BLADE RUNNER 2: SAY WHAT?

Oh, for the love of all that’s holy. During a Q&A session for Eagle Eye, screenwriter Travis Wright said he was working through “various treatments for a Blade Runner sequel.” Apparently, Blade Runner co-executive producer Bud Yorkin is also involved, but so far no studio has taken the bait. Well, duh. Cinematical.com did follow up on the story with a quote from Wright’s Eagle Eye co-writer John Glenn: “There was a point where Travis and I were working with Bud Yorkin on a sequel to Blade Runner, but that was years back. It never got too far off the ground because the movie is so perfect, so the more we thought about it, the more uneasy we became with the idea.” I’m sure everyone’s got loads of ideas about what happens to Deckhard, Rachael and the like, but unless they can get a Ridley Scott involved, it probably won’t happen.

SCORSESE & DE NIRO…AGAIN

And are we tired of the pairing? Hell no! Variety reports that Paramount is plotting to bring Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro together again to adapt I Heard You Paint Houses, the book about the mob assassin who many believe was involved in the death of Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. De Niro will play Frank “the Irishman” Sheeran, who is reputed to have carried out more than 25 mob murders. That’s a really dumb title for a crime drama, but if it’s got Scorsese behind the wheel–not to mention Schindler’s List screenwriter Steve Zaillian’s adaptation–it’s definitely worth a look.

JACK BLACK HAS ACTION FEVER

Jack wants to drive fast cars and jump off buildings. That’s right–he’s caught the action bug. Apparently not having learned his lesson from King Kong, one-half of Tenacious D is reuniting with Kung Fu Panda writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger for an untitled action comedy which will be a comedic take off on The Bourne Identity. The Hollywood Reporter says Our Hero will be an American who finds himself washed up on the shores of Cuba with no idea of who he is and how he got there. He comes to the conclusion that he must be a superspy, which is far from the truth. Natch. Wonder if he’ll will get into shape for this one?

OUR NEW YOUNG PRODIGY

Danielle Panabaker, of Sky High and Mr. Brooks fame, has been cast as the female lead in Prodigy, about an elite prep school that promises to turn teens into geniuses through a drug-and-diet regimen for a half-million-dollar tuition. When several alumni turn up dead, the Reporter says, the school’s valedictorian is assigned to investigate the murders, leading him to a rebellious student (Max Thieriot). Panabaker plays the daughter of a senator, who begins to question the powers that be. As well she should! Drugs and dieting do not a genius make, in my opinion.
