The Quick Rap: Three Questions for … Heather Graham!
With a tour de force turn in the new dramatic thriller Broken, Heather Graham stars as Hope, a struggling, young L.A. singer/songwriter who is stuck in a dead-end waitressing job–and gets pulled into a dark world with unexpected consequence when she falls in love with a heroin-addicted charmer.
Hollywood.com: This movie has some challenging elements. What was the most difficult scene to film?
Heather Graham: You know, it was really hard to sing, to be honest. It was really nerve-wracking! And I had to sing and play the guitar! I always wanted to sing, but it’s not something that comes easily to me. So to do it in a movie was really scary.
HW: Did you look to anyone for inspiration when developing your character?
HG: A friend of mine wrote the song–her name is Karen Sanchez. We were having dinner one night with Alan White [the director] and they hit it off. So he gave Karen the script and she wrote that song for the movie. They taught me the chords on guitar and I had a month and a half to practice the song, over and over and over again. And even then, it was really hard!
HW: Broken is such a gritty tale. What attracted you to it?
HG: When I read the script, I really related to it. It was smart in a psychological way. I liked that there was a twist at the end and you look at the movie in a different way. And I could relate to that feeling of almost … loving your own self-destruction? And just destroying yourself [laughs] and just feeling so desperate in Hollywood. It’s a crazy feeling!
Heather Graham‘s Broken opens in limited release October 5th.
