Cameron Crowe’s Singles explores life and love in Seattle during the grunge era. What opens this film up to both genders is a magnified look at complicated relationships coupled with a soundtrack that nearly eclipsed the movie in popularity. Crowe’s couples include the wannabe grunge rocker Cliff Poncier (Matt Dillon) and his groupie Janet Livermore (Bridget Fonda) as well as Linda Powell (Kyra Sedgewick) and her on again, off again boyfriend Steve Dunne (Campbell Scott). Seattle’s most popular bands jumped at the opportunity to help Crowe, the most famous cameos include members from Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.

Woody Allen makes the list a second time for his comical take on two American girls on holiday in Spain. First Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) meet a charming Spaniard named Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem). The conformist Vicky falls for him, but pushes her feelings aside because she’s already engaged. Carefree Cristina takes another approach; she moves in with Juan Antonio and eventually settles into a three-way relationship with him and his ex Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz). Of course a sexy smooch between Johansson and Cruz couldn’t be avoided.

The swashbuckling satire opens with a grandfather (Peter Falk) reading a bedtime story to his young grandson (Fred Savage). The mushy tale of young lovers, Buttercup and Westley, has the boy gagging, but he’s soon enthralled when Westley leaves town and returns as a pirate and Buttercup becomes engaged to another man, who just happens to be a prince. Sword fighting, fire swamps and even a torture machine make this one a hit with the guys, while Westley’s undying love for Buttercup makes it a classic with the ladies.
