Winter Movie Guide 2002: “About Schmidt”

About Schmidt

The Players: Jack Nicholson, Hope Davis, Dermot Mulroney, Kathy Bates, Howard Hesseman; directed by Alexander Payne (Election).

The Skinny: Nicholson is Warren Schmidt, a man who finds himself alone after the sudden death of his wife. He packs up his 30-foot Winnebago to set out on a journey across the Nebraska plains to try and stop his daughter’s wedding to someone he doesn’t like–discovering more than just bad roadside food along the way.

The Bottom Line: Payne‘s biting and hilarious commentary in the dark comedy Election tells us the writer/director knows a few things about creating a compelling movie. Given this and the fact the Oscar buzz around Nicholson is louder than any beehive, we expect big things from Schmidt.
