The Skinny: The Academy Award-nominated creators of the ultra-quirky Being John Malkovich take you on another twisted head trip in this adaptation of the offbeat book The Orchid Thief. Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman runs into trouble trying to get the screenplay finished, and ends up writing the story about his difficulty in coming up with an adaptation.
The Bottom Line: This film may star Cage and Streep and be directed by auteur Jonze, but the film truly belongs to Kaufman, who has the unmitigated audacity of writing himself into his own screenplay. It’s outrageous, it’s narcissistic–and it could very well turn out to be the one of the most unique films ever made.
