Winter Movie Guide 2002: “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

The Players: Sam Rockwell, Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts, George Clooney; directed by George Clooney

The Skinny: Based on the enigmatic cult memoir of game show impresario Chuck Barris in which he claims that at the height of his TV career he was recruited by the CIA and trained to become a covert operative, this adaptation takes his word for it and both investigates and portrays the story of the legendary showman’s double life as a television producer/host by day, CIA assassin by night. Rockwell takes on the role of Barris.

The Bottom Line: Well, this is definitely a year for first-time directors. We just hope Clooney has siphoned enough valuable tricks about directing a quirky film from his good friend Steven Soderbergh to make Confessions worthwhile. The premise is just too good. As well, we hope this film finally skyrockets the underrated Rockwell (The Green Mile) into leading-man status.
