Singer, songwriter, guitar, artist, mother

Modern Matriarch:

Liz Phair‘s first two independently released albums may have been commercial flops, but they inspired a generation of female musicians. These days Phair, never much of one to stick to the party line, seems to have eschewed alt-punk for pop, but she brings the same no-nonsense style to a broader audience. Her new single “Why Can’t I?” is one of the most refreshing, inspirational girly-pop songs in a long time.

Movie Tunes:

Of Phair‘s early work, the best-known song is probably “Rocket Boy,” which appeared on her sophomore album Whip-Smart (1994) and on the Stealing Beauty soundtrack. It took Phair nine years to complete her next album because she and her husband, Jim Staskausas, a film editor who had worked on Phair‘s videos, decided to have a baby. But Phair‘s back in business now, with the single from her self-titled third album appearing in the new Mandy Moore film, How To Deal.
