According to THR, producers of Zhang Yimou’s ambitious historical drama, which stars Christian Bale as an American trapped in Nanking, China, after Japan’s Imperial Army invades the city in 1937, are at work on a distribution deal that could see the film open in U.S. theaters in December. Wrekin Hilll Entertainment, the independent production company which is in talks to pick up the film’s U.S. rights, is said to be planning “an aggressive awards push” for it once it hits our shores. It has already been designated as China’s official Oscar entry in the Best Foreign-Language Film category.

The Flowers of War will make its international debut in Beijing on December 16.
