After a long search — and some odd criteria — to cast the role of Syrena in the next Pirates of the Caribbean installment, producers have gone with French model/actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey.
Berges-Frisbey is a 23-year-old “beautiful and alluring young mermaid,” according to Pirates’ press notes. Although probably unknown to U.S. audiences, she is a well-known, rising star in her native France and, in addition to modeling, has appeared both on the big screen and on the stage.
She will star in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides alongside lead returning cast member Johnny Depp, while Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom will not be reprising their roles.

Pirates 4 is set to open on May 20, 2011.
