The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pie Society. I’m sold.
I don’t even need to know who is making it, the title is enough. Oh, Kenneth Branagh is directing? The guy who has done wonders with several of Shakespeare’s finest works, including Hamlet? And has, in accordance with this, proven some heroic versatility by taking on last year’s Marvel hit Thor? Okay, yeah…I guess that makes it even cooler. But there’s nothing that could improve this news from here on out. I’m telling you, noth—Kate Winslet? Damn. It got better.
Director Branagh is teaming with the modern marvel that is Winslet for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pie Society, a film about a post-WWII magazine columnist (Winslet) who reports on the stories of a man from the island of Guernsey. The man tells Winslet’s character about his island’s practice of feigning a public book club as a means of plotting against and outsmarting the Nazi occupiers. Seems as classy as movies get.
Branagh directed Winslet in 1996’s Hamlet, wherein she played the despondently troubled Ophelia. The funky title of this new project is just the icing on the cake—or the nutmeg on the potato pie. It seems like its story, helmer and star have enough promise to make this a winner even if it were called something less interesting. Like War and Books and Trickery and Maybe Some Shakespearean Elements, Considering the Director. Actually, I kind of like that better.
