I rarely like to throw around my advanced knowledge of genetics here, but I can’t sit back and let ignorance win. Rio is about the last male and female of a special species of birds who have to hit it off to save the species. Now if a species were reduced to a single female and male, it is doomed. There won’t be enough genetic diversity for the species to flourish; the best they can hope to do is branch off from a similar species and go from there. And how do I know so much about genetics you ask? Well, after you’ve been told “not even if you’re the last man on Earth” at the bar a thousand times you start thinking about the actual possibilities and yeah, one thing leads to another after devouring all the Wikipedia pages you can get your eyes on and soon enough you wind up in grad school going for a degree in genetics. Happens all the time.
Anyway, Jesse Eisenberg voices the male macaw who not only has to impregnate Anne Hathaway’s blue macaw (didn’t think I’d write that sentence when I woke up this morning) but also has to learn how to fly. Talk about performance anxiety.
