This morning Marvel announced a new deal with Sony Pictures that Spider-Man will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Iron Man, Captain American, and Thor all co-exist.
In this deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from the MCU, something rumored to be as early as a cameo in the end credits for this year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, or a full character in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, which his character has a big role in, in this comic book arc. Sony Pictures still plans to release the next installment in it’s $4 billion Spider-Man franchise on July 28th, 2017. It will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert Marvel team and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise for the studio for 13 years.
But what does this mean for the future of Spider-Man and the rest of the inhabitants of the Marvel universe? Well, as far as the MCU line-up goes, four films have now been shifted. To start, Thor: Ragnarok previously occupied that July date, so it will move back about to Nov. 3 of that year—a date previously scheduled for Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther film. That movie now will shift to July 6, 2018—a date previously held by Captain Marvel, the first Marvel Studios film to star a female in the lead. That film, which has no lead actress currently, will come out Nov. 2, 2018. And finally, that date was originally set for Inhumans, which will move back to July 12, 2019. As of right now, no other Marvel movies have been changed.
But what about our current Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield? Rumors have been spinning since last year’s Sony email hack that Andy would not be returning as Spidey. And out of everything, all the excitement fans have had for Spider-Man finally coming over to the MCU, there’s even more anger that our favorite Spidey won’t return.
