Aha! Now we’re getting somewhere with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. For a brief bit, all we were treated to was flashy shots of pirating and snippy lines from Jack Sparrow but now we seem to have something resembling a plot (which is about three steps ahead of where we were with At World’s End). It seems Captain Jack is sent on a mission to find the fountain of youth (easy enough) but in order to get there he has to have a mermaid (which justifies their existence). That seems to be where the love interest steps in as Sam Claflin and Astrid Berdes-Frisbey have replaced Bloom and Knightley. Ian McShane’s Blackbeard also has a purpose now as he stole Captain Jack’s ship the Pearl and brought it to life, so there’s that. He seems to be the only person capable of sailing to the fountain, which explains Penelope Cruz. Gotta love that.
