International phenomena though it is, Doctor Who isn’t exactly the first show that we’d expect to take fashion cues from – after all, it’s a campy sci-fi show targeted at British children; and it’s main protagonist has been known to don a celery boutonniere (and whatever the heck that thing was).
But season 7 (and, presumably, the upcoming season 8) has brought us an unlikely style icon: Clara Oswin Oswald, portrayed by actress Jenna Coleman. Clara might not be conventionally stylish (she’s no Serena van der Woodsen or Joan Watson), but she has her own unique sensibilities. She tends to favor all of the ultra-girly clothes that we may or may not secretly love: Peter Pan collars, retro-inspired dresses, high-low hems, and quirky cardigans – she’s got a taste for twee that rivals even Queen of Twee-ville Zooey Deschanel (and mark my words, you’ll be seeing a style profile on her soon). What’s special about Clara though, is that she usually finds a way to balance the sweet with a little edge; creating a whole new aesthetic – she pairs her cutesy collared cardigan with a leather mini-skirt; her flower-printed frock with a motorcycle jacket and stompy boots. It’s wearable; it’s (semi) practical – why not give it a try?
Clara’s look might not be for everyone – but come on, she’s Doctor approved: she’s cool! (Like bowties – yes, I went there).
