One of the best things about period dramas is the clothes – I mean, who cares about good writing, acting, and storytelling?
In all seriousness, Masters of Sex excels in all arenas (watch it for some great performances), and as such, its fashion game is on point – sometimes there’s just no beating mid-century fashion when it comes to understated glamour.
And Virginia Johnson (nightclub singer-turned secretary-turned research assistant), played by the very talented Lizzy Caplan, has the look of the decade down pat. She may not have the panache of Libby Masters (whose maternity wear was somehow simultaneously the height of style and the height of adorable), but she does have the perfect office look – heck, maybe we should be taking notes.
While it may be something of a faux pas to show up to work tomorrow in a brown wool suit, Virginia wears plenty that we can take reference to today. She tends to favor impeccably fitted pencil skirts that show off her enviable hip-to-waist ratio, along with feminine blouses. She has a fine attention to detail – most of her blouses have some sort of bow or other types of embellishment: it’s the perfect combination of ladylike, fashion-forward, and office-approved.
And that’s not to say, she doesn’t do formal wear elegantly – the blue lace number (prettily decorated with a black chiffon overlay and delicate beading) she wears in this promotional photo is utterly gorgeous. And the burgundy strapless ballgown she wears (with emeralds!) in the first episode may just be one of my favorite dresses, ever.
