S10E21: While Steven Tyler was having the time of his life on Idol last night, celebrating his birthday with a special rendition of “Happy Birthday” from none other than Stevie Wonder, the night was a little more stressful for three other people. We found Thia Megia, Stefano Langone, and (shocker of the night) Casey Abrams as our bottom three and as the night drew to a close it turned out that Casey was the one with the least votes. CASEY. I’m not sure how this happened. I really don’t know why Casey was voted off. I’m almost speechless. (But not really because, come on. It’s my job to be unable to shut up.) I get why Thia and Stefano were down this week. Stefano’s got the pipes, but his performances lack heart; and while Thia has a fantastic voice, she’s not figured out how to use it to own the stage and that’s not going to grab people or their votes.
Yes, Casey’s had a little bit of a dip the past two weeks. The “Teen Spirit” cover was, well, weird and his Motown pick was a little too growly and his hair made him look like a used car salesman, but like the judges said, we know who Casey is. He’s by no means perfect, but he belongs there. What the hell happened? The only thing I can think of is that maybe Casey fans were so sure he’d make it that none of them voted, or thought other contestants needed their votes more? That’s really all I can think of because there is no reason he should be gone. Luckily for me and other Casey fans, the judges thought so too. They didn’t even let him finish singing because they knew instantly that this was the time to use the save — the one and only save for the whole season. So, as Casey broke down in disbelief — seriously, he tackled Ryan Seacrest, he fell so hard — we were reminded that while we are lucky enough to get to keep Casey, next week two contestants will be going home to make up for it.
Let’s just hope America doesn’t screw up and send him home again. This is why you vote, people. Okay?
