Frank PiersonIt was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that Frank Pierson, decorated writer, director, and producer of film and television, has died at age 87. Pierson’s death is attributed to natural causes, following a brief struggle with an unnamed illness.

Pierson’s most celebrated contributions to Hollywood are perhaps the screenplays to Cool Hand Luke and Dog Day Afternoon. The multihyphenate also wrote and directed the 1976 incarnation of A Star Is Born — a story that director Clint Eastwood is remaking presently.

In the realm of television, Pierson was a writer/producer on the first season of the CBS series The Good Wife, and remained an active writer/producer on Mad Men. Pierson wrote the Season 5 episode “Signal 30.”
