Although 20th Century Studios has not officially announced the project, multiple industry reports indicate the long-awaited sequel is moving forward. The follow-up is also expected to reunite the creative team behind the 2009 cult favorite, with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody returning to write the script and Karyn Kusama back in the director’s chair.

The original Jennifer’s Body followed high school student Jennifer Check (Fox), who becomes possessed after a failed ritual and begins preying on her classmates. Seyfried starred as her best friend, Needy, who ultimately confronted Jennifer in the film’s bloody finale. While the movie struggled at the box office upon release, it later found a passionate audience and has since become a beloved cult horror-comedy.

Kusama previously hinted that discussions about a sequel were underway, teasing that Cody had developed an idea that captures the same offbeat, chaotic spirit as the original film while taking the story in a fresh direction.

Cody has also spoken openly about her renewed appreciation for Jennifer’s Body, calling it one of the projects that best represents her voice as a writer. She has credited the film’s growing popularity over the years with opening the door for more horror-comedy projects, including Lisa Frankenstein.

Plot details for production remain under wraps, and the studio has yet to confirm a release date. However, if production begins as reported this fall, fans may not have to wait much longer for an official announcement—and the return of one of horror’s most celebrated cult classics.
