Luca Guadagnino is bringing one of the most talked-about stories in the artificial intelligence world to the big screen with Artificial. The upcoming drama centers on OpenAI founder Sam Altman and the turbulent events surrounding his controversial firing and eventual return to the company.
The film has already generated plenty of buzz after Neon acquired the project from Amazon MGM. It is now set to make its highly anticipated world premiere at the New York Film Festival.

Andrew Garfield stars as Sam Altman in Artificial, with Monica Barbaro portraying OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati. Yura Borisov plays OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, while Ike Barinholtz takes on the role of Elon Musk.

The cast also includes Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman and Chris O’Dowd. The film is produced by David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, Luca Guadagnino, Jennifer Fox and Simon Rich.
The story focuses on the tumultuous period when Altman was fired and subsequently rehired by OpenAI. Through that real-world controversy, Artificial explores the people and events surrounding one of the biggest developments in modern technology.
Release Date
Artificial will have its world premiere on October 5, 2026, at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall as part of the New York Film Festival. Luca Guadagnino and members of the cast are expected to attend. The movie will also screen at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11.
