Not many of us will win Tonys in our lives, but it’s okay when they go to humble people who deserve them, like Scarlett Johansson. But in addition to Scarlett’s win, Catherine Zeta-Jones walked away with an award, too. After she’d accepted her trophy on stage, she chose to… thank (maybe that’s what it was?) husband Michael Douglas in a pretty unusual way.
She said, “See that man over there? He’s a movie star, and I get to sleep with him every night.”
I should mention today she’s quoted saying she’s embarrassed about her words, but for my purposes, I’m not going to dwell on that after-thought too much.
Yes, the pride she has in her husband is all cute on the western front. But what’s funny about her statement is two things: one, nobody I know would even want to marry Michael Douglas right now (‘Fatal Attraction’ days, at best), so the fact she thinks she’s lucky to sleep with such a smelly wrinkled prize is entertaining. The second funny part of this situation is she thinks the way to get us to support her Tony win is to brag about whose snoring she listens to at night…as if his coughs and sputters for nighttime air is the reason she won the Tony!
Oh, and thirdly: anybody can memorize a bunch of lines and attach a wig to their heads with bobby pins. CZK should be careful about which pedestal she chooses to stand on.
