In a recent interview with Fader Lana Del Rey was asked about feminism, and quickly turned the conversation into something out of this world. Literally: “Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like, god. I’m just not really that interested….I’m more interested in, you know, SpaceX and Tesla, what’s going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities.”
LDR has been criticized in the past for her portrayals of relationships (and, arguably, subservient, dominated women) in her music videos and photo shoots. Although she does go on to define her idea of a feminist (“a woman who feels free enough to do whatever she wants“), she also maintains that she likes her love to be a little hardcore.
Many of Lana Del Rey’s fans identify as feminists, and these statements could make it incredibly difficult to enjoy her music. But you could also view her words as, still, empowering. Just because someone does not want to label themselves a feminist, it does not mean that all of their messages are disempowering for women. Who knows what women will be inspired by LDR’s interests in space? And who’s to say that space issues and technological advancements aren’t things that should be taken up by feminism? Esteemed cultural critic and feminist author Patricia Clough might be especially interested in Lana Del Rey’s statements. So it could be argued that even while appearing to be anti-feminism, Lana Del Rey is encouraging the expansion of feminist thought.
