Is it too soon to be nostalgic for 2003? Perhaps, but after reading their flirty Tweets today, Madonna and Britney Spears have us wishing we were back in a simpler time, when Christina Aguilera was still “diirty” we’d yet to be exposed to K-Fed.
It all started when Spears praised Madonna’s new album MDNA, which just became the icon’s eigth number one studio album. Madonna (in a rare appearance on Twitter) responded with a cheeky invitation:
The two continued teasing each other (and fans), writing:
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like this chatter is going anywhere. In January, Madonna told Nightline that while Spears is a “good kisser,” “I don’t like to repeat myself.” Okay, fine. But if we can’t see hot pop icon-on-pop icon action, we want to see a redo of these famous smooches:
Adrien Brody and Halle Berry at the 2003 Academy Awards
Sure, it was a bit rude of Brody to surprise Berry with a public kiss, but we’ll forgive him because this lip lock is technically perfect. Plus, we’re excited about anything that breaks up and excruciatingly long Oscars telecast.
Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards
Somehow Sandra Bullock managed to turn every dude’s fantasy into a statement of woman power. Bullock had been in hiding following the revelation that Jesse James cheated on her, but with this kiss she told him, “I’m back — and unlike you, I can still kiss one of the hottest women in the world.”
Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley at the 1994 VMAs
Obviously, this one will never happen again, and not just because MJ is no longer with us. Yes, everyone will freak when Kim Kardashian and Kanye West finally kiss in public, but we’ll never see a couple flaunt the shocking merger of two uber-famous families again. Unless, of course, if Suri Cruise jumps on a couch and proclaims her undying love for Maddox Jolie-Pitt in about 20 years.
Kate Middleton and Prince William at their wedding in 2011
Prince William and the Duchess Formerly Known as Kate Middleton will have plenty of public kisses in the future, but none will be quite like this, i.e. they won’t dust off the crown jewels and the Little Mermaid prince costume and kiss on a Buckingham Palace balcony. We’d like to see the world get this worked up about a totally chaste kiss again.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards
Don’t tell us they aren’t dating anymore. We don’t want to hear it. We love this moment like, well, as they say in “Lazy Sunday,” “McAdams loves Gosling.”
